Weed and Algae Identification
Algae
Algae grows in various forms. Filamentous algae is the most common. It grows in strings or mats, often on the surface. Planktonic algae causes green water and consists of millions of individual cells that cloud the water. Chara is a weed-like form of algae that grows like a carpet along the bottom of the pond. It has a musky odor and a gritty texture. Use liquid Cutrine for filamentous and planktonic algae, and use granular Cutrine for chara.
Cattails & Other Emergent Plants
Emergent plants grow around the perimeter of a pond in shallow water, with all or most of their foliage above the water’s surface. Common emergent plants include cattails, bulrush, reeds, purple loosestrife, pennywort, and pickerelweed. Use ShoreClear for the best control.
Pondweeds
The pondweed family includes more than a dozen varieties. These plants can grow in deeper water, up to 10 feet deep in clear water. Sonar, Aquathol Super K, and Hydrothol are effective for controlling pondweed growth.
Elodea
This plant grows in thick clumps and is usually not a major problem. The leaves grow in whorls of three around the stem. It can also grow in deeper water, similar to pondweeds. Komeen or Reward are commonly used to control Elodea.
Duckweed & Watermeal
Duckweed is difficult to control. It forms a thin layer over the surface of calm, wind-free ponds. Duckweed does not grow well in moving water, so using a surface aerator can help control its growth. For chemical treatment, Clipper or Sonar are good choices. Often, a single Sonar treatment can provide control for multiple seasons. Reward or Weedtrine, mixed with Cutrine and a surfactant, can also be used; however, regrowth can occur quickly if the application is not done properly.
Waterlilies
While beautiful to look at, water lilies can become a problem in many ponds. They grow from a large central root system. Some growth is beneficial for providing shade and cover for fish, but when left unchecked, they can become overpopulated. Use Navigate to control unwanted growth. ShoreClear or AquaNeat with a surfactant will also work if applied after blossoms appear.
Eurasian Milfoil
A very prolific plant that spreads easily because fragments can re-root and continue to grow. Do not attempt to remove it by raking. It grows very densely, making swimming and boating difficult. Sonar or Navigate are the best treatment options.
Other Less Common Weeds
Naiad, coontail, bladderwort, hydrilla, parrot feather, and water hyacinth.
